Generation 1

HENRY SUTCLIFFE was born about 1808 in Rossendale, Lancashire. He married ANN, who died in Heaton Norris on the 29th August, 1840. Henry was earning his living as a cotton twister in the Heaton Norris cotton mill.

The children of HENRY SUTCLIFFE are:

  1. MARTHA SUTCLIFFE, b. abt. 1832, Littleborough, Lancashire; Occ. Laundress.

  2. JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE, b. abt. 1836; d. bef. 1856; Not found in 1851 Census.

He met HARRIET CHAPMAN, who was living in Pendleton, Salford. Harriet had been born in Eccles, Lancashire, about 1813. She went to live in Heaton Norris, Levenshulme, where Henry, eventually worked a small, six acre farm called Plantation Farm. He also worked as a machine printer in the cotton mill whilst farming. About 1858, they settled in Stalybridge, Cheshire.

Henry died in Stalybridge and was buried on the 20th August, 1869 in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge. After Henry died, Harriet moved to live Ashton under Lyne with her daughters and grandchildren. She was brought back to Stalybridge to be buried on the 26th June, 1895 in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge.

Generation 2

GEORGE HENRY SUTCLIFFE (HENRY1) was born on the 16th February, 1841 in Pendleton, near Salford, Lancashire and was baptised on the 21st March, 1841 in St Mary Parish Church, Eccles. He grew up on on small farm in Heaton Norris, Levenshulme before he moved to Stalybridge with his parents. It was here he met and married ANN JANE HALLSWORTH on the 1st March, 1862 in St. Peters R.C. Church, Stalybridge, Cheshire. Ann Jane was the daughter of WILLIAM HALLSWORTH and BRIDGET GRATTON and was born in Stockport, Cheshire about 1836. She lived with her parents in Dukinfield, Cheshire until she married. The witnesses to marriage were George Gafferery and Bridget Hagerty,

After their marriage George Henry and Ann Jane lived in Stalybridge, where they brought up their family. George was a calico printer. Ann Jane died on the 6th June, 1917 and was buried on the 9th June, 1917 in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge. George Henry died on the 27th March, 1918 in 11, Port Street, Stalybridge and was buried on the 30th March, 1918 with his wife.

LAURENCE SUTCLIFFE (HENRY1) was born about 1848 in Heaton Norris, Levenshulme, Lancashire. He married MARTHA ANN HUMPHREYS, daughter of EDWARD HUMPHREYS, in St. Paul Parish Church in 17th September, 1871. The witnesses to their marriage were William and Sarah Ann Humphreys. Laurence and Martha resided in 47, Culcheth Lane, Newton, Cheshire. Laurence worked as a cotton piecer in 1861 and a calico printer in 1881.

Martha Ann died in Stalybridge, aged 48 years and was buried on the 13th November, 1896 in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge.

HENRIETTA SUTCLIFFE (HENRY1) was born in 1853 in Heaton Norris, Levenshulme, Lancashire. She married ROBERT BAILEY, son of ROBERT BAILEY, in St. Paul Parish Church, Stalybridge on the 6th April,1874. The witnesses to their marriage were Henrietta's brother, Joseph Sutcliffe, and Annie Nevill. Henrietta worked as a cotton winder and Robert was a printer. They lived in Stalybridge, but Henrietta had a short married life and was widowed by 1881.

JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE (HENRY1) was born in 1856 in Levenshulme, Lancashire. He married ELIZABETH KNOTT, daughter of ISAAC KNOTT, on the 24th August, 1878 in St. John Parish Church, Dukinfield, Cheshire. Elizabeth Lewis Witnessed their marriage. Joseph's occupation was a beetler, but in 1881 he was serving in Russia. By 1891, they had settled near Eccles, Lancashire.

She married JOHN WALTON, son of THOMAS WALTON, a farmer, and HANNAH BEARD, in St. Michael Parish Church, Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire on the 20th November, 1880. Their Witnesses were Henrietta Bailey, Susannah's sister, and William Woodcock.

Susannah died in 1915 and John died in 1931.

Her godparents were James and Mary Ann Hegarty. She married JONATHAN CARTLEDGE in 1884. It was a Civil Marriage in Ashton.
